Fantasy Land: Studs and Duds for Week 1

In what will be a weekly occurence, we'll give suggestions on who to start in your fantasy league, and who to sit on the bench. We'll try to avoid stating the obvious, like "start Tom Brady" and dig a little deeper for some less obvious choices. Enough with the introduction, let's get started...

Stud of the Week: Mark Sanchez, QB, NYJ — Yes, Sanchez is kind of a bus driver at the quarterback position. But last season he came into his own a little bit and will be looking to expand his role even more this season even though the Jets will still make their name with their running game and defense. The matchup this week is just too juicy to ignore though. Sanchez will face a Rob Ryan-led Cowboys defense that looked lost in the preseason, will be playing without cornerback Terence Newman and is now going to maybe be without cornerback Michael Jenkins, who hurt his knee in Wednesday's practice. That would put a big ol' target square on the back of the backups in the Cowboys secondary. Add in Santonio Holmes and a rejuvenated Plaxico Burress at wide receiver, and Sanchez is in line for a huge game on 9/11 in New York (well, actually New Jersey, but who's counting?).

Dud of the Week: Miles Austin, WR, DAL — Continuing with the same theme, and game, the Cowboys are banged up, including Austin who is coming off a hamstring issue suffered this preseason. With Tyron Smith out for Sunday night's game, the already paper-thin offensive line becomes that much thinner. The Jets aren't the defense you'd want to go play with a depleted unit up front. Tony Romo will likely be under heavy pressure, and cover corner extraordinare Darrelle Revis will likely be locked up on Austin for much of the night. It's not shaping up to be a very good night for the Cowboys No. 1 receiver.

Good luck to you and yours this fantasy season.
