The Cowboys picked a good year to play in a bad division.
Outside of the AFC South, the NFC East is the worst division in the NFL. When the Eagles beat the Giants tonight the leader will be 3-3. In other words, the Cowboys at 2-3 are far from out of any race.
Those of you writing off the “lost season” are, honestly, premature and naïve.
For a couple reasons: Matt Cassel gives the Cowboys a better chance to win because he can – and will – throw the ball downfield. The schedule isn’t as spooky as you think. And, remember, by Thanksgiving you’ll have a healthy Tony Romo and Dez Bryant.
To me they need to go 2-2 the next four weeks to stay in the race for the division championship. That’s right, just to get Thanksgiving at 4-5 and you get Romo, etc. the final seven games. But when you’ve lost three in-a-row how do you go 2-2. Like this:
The next four games are against the Giants, Seahawks, Eagles and Buccaneers – otherwise known as four mediocre teams with a combined record of 9-12. Dallas has already beaten New York and we’ve seen the Giants self-destruct. Seattle was booed off its home field Sunday afternoon. Dallas also has already beaten Philadelphia. And Tampa Bay is led by a rookie quarterback with few offensive weapons.
Going .500 for a month is doable with Cassel. And the Cowboys still winning the NFC East remains realistic.
