Cowboys Will Scour Rookies In Search Of Full-Time Running Back

The Cowboys are moving on from DeMarco Murray. It looks more and more as though a big part of that process will be the NFL Draft.

Owner Jerry Jones on Tuesday said the top backs in the draft will all visit Valley Ranch before April 30. That group includes Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon, Georgia’s Todd Gurley, Nebraska’s Ameer Abdullah, Indiana’s Tevin Coleman and Boise State’s Jay Ajayi.

The Cowboys have four running backs on the roster. But none of them – Darren McFadden, Joseph Randle, Lance Dunbar or Ryan Williams – are projected as every-down players with the skills to replace the NFL’s leading rusher.

“The top backs, all of those top backs, and we may have a down-the-line guy,” Jones told reporters at the NFL owners meetings. “The guys we bring in will be full-time backs, not a specialist or third-down guy.”

It’s a long-shot the Cowboys can find one runner to eat up Murray’s production. But that best chance will come from the group of rookies they’ll interview at Valley Ranch.
