Cowboys Spoke To Jenkins After Claiborne Pick

In the wake of the Dallas Cowboys’ selection of LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne in the first round of last month’s NFL Draft, multiple reports citing multiple sources indicated that the team was shopping cornerback Mike Jenkins. No deal was done (or has been done yet) though, leaving the team with some ‘splaining to do to Jenkins.

Secondary coach Jerome Henderson, who was brought into the fold from Cleveland earlier this offseason, said he has already spoken to the USF product.

I’ll keep that conversation between Mike and I,” Henderson said, per ESPN Dallas. “It was a personal conversation and it was me speaking to him, both as a coach and also just a guy who’s played in the league and been through some things … We had a real good conversation.”

The selection of Claiborne was just the latest sign that Jenkins could soon be gone from Dallas--not only is he coming off reconstructive shoulder surgery, but he is entering the final year of his contract. The shoulder issues that brought on the surgery limited him in 2011, and in 2010, he was just bad.

But judging by last season, his first with Dallas, defensive coordinator Rob Ryan believes that, if nothing else, the team has a gamer in Jenkins.

“Mike Jenkins gave me everything he can,” Ryan said. “He had a blown shoulder. He had everything going on. He played his heart out. But half the games he wasn’t there, which is unfortunate, because he’s a super talented guy. I think we were banged up there at that position. We had every kid on our roster playing corner for us. We’ve got obviously two fantastic players to help us, and that’s exactly what they’re going to do.”
