Cowboys Now Unlikely to Add Allen: Report

The Cowboys hosted free agent DE Jared Allen at Valley Ranch on Tuesday

The Dallas Cowboys’ signing of defensive tackle Henry Melton means the team will not likely continue their pursuit of defensive end Jared Allen, David Moore of the Dallas Morning News reports.

Allen arrived in Dallas for a visit on Monday night and spent the day Tuesday at Valley Ranch, meeting with Jason Garrett and co.

Melton, who departed Dallas on Monday after his visit, always seemed the more likely addition, due to his connection with former Bears and current Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli. Marinelli coached Melton to his first and only Pro Bowl season in 2012.

Like DeMarcus Ware, who he’d replace if he came to Dallas, Allen has led the league in sacks twice. He was named the NFC’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2011.

Allen is 31, and will be 32 next month. Melton is 27, and won’t turn 28 until next October.
