Cowboys Keep Arlington Grannies Young at Heart

A group of grandmothers bring the spirit to watch the Cowboys together

You can’t go anywhere these days without running into die-hard Cowboys fans, but you’ll find perhaps the most excited ones in a place you’d least expect.

They call themselves the “Greenfield Girls.”

A group of 70-, 80- and 90-year-old grandmothers living in the Greenfield Residences, a senior living center in Arlington, decked out head-to-toe in Cowboys gear. They’re loud and proud and they’ve been fans longer than most have been alive.

“Ever since I can remember,” said 89-year-old Jean Gibson.

Her most vibrant Cowboys memory might ring a bell. It was Roger Staubach’s famous Hail Mary pass to Drew Pearson with 32 seconds left against the Minnesota Vikings back in 1975.

“We screamed and hollered until my neighbor came running to see what was wrong,” Gibson said, laughing.

Nearly 40 years later, the screaming and hollering hasn’t calmed down one bit.

“I’ve had to walk outside and get my breath,” said John Davis, a Cowboys fan surrounded by a ton of estrogen for every single game.

“We tell ‘em what to do,” said Jo Dodson. “We all tell ‘em what to do!”
