Garrett: Giants Wide Receivers Present ‘Great Challenges'

The Cowboys secondary is both experienced and healthy entering the 2016 NFL season, but will be tested right out of the gate against one of the NFL’s top passing attacks in the New York Giants.

“We feel good about them individually. We feel good about them as a group,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said of his defensive backs. “They are good football players and they have been throughout their careers. It’s good to have them back healthy, practicing and playing in the preseason.”

Dallas will have cornerback Orlando Scandrick back to begin the season after he missed all of 2015 with a torn ACL suffered during training camp. The veteran has nine career interceptions and had the best season of his career in 2014 before the knee injury.

“One of the things we love about Orlando is the spirit he brings, the edge that he brings and the chip on his shoulder that he brings,” Garrett said. “He’s always had that, and it’s always benefited him and it’s benefited us. And really, I think it benefited him coming back from this injury.”

Led by quarterback Eli Manning and wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr., the Giants had the fourth-best passing attack in the NFC in 2015, averaging 272 yards per game through the air. New York adds back receiver Victor Cruz, who missed the entire 2015 season due to injury, and talented rookie Sterling Shepard as well.

“It’s a challenging position, guarding receivers in the NFL, and we have some great challenges this Sunday with the receiving corps the Giants have,” Garrett said.

The Cowboys have beaten the Giants five of the last six times the two teams have faced off. Kickoff Sunday is set for 3:25 p.m. in AT&T Stadium.
