Cowboys Fan Loses Bet, Will Name Son “Robert Griffin”

The Cowboys' Thanksgiving Day loss may have been their biggest of all-time for one fan

All’s fair in love and war.

That’s how Cowboys fan Marisa Pena explains how her soon-to-arrive son got the name Robert Griffin Vega, per the account this week in the Washington Post.

Pena and her boyfriend, Emanuel Vega--a Redskins fan--were watching the Cowboys-Redskins Thanksgiving Day game last November and, as they have many times before, the couple decided to make a wager on the outcome. At first, they agreed that the loser would wear the jersey of the winner. Then, it dawned on them that they still needed a name for the aforementioned baby.

So why not let the rivalry game decide it?

“She didn’t really disagree with that at all, but she started saying she would name it Troy Aikman or Emmitt Smith, all these old Cowboys,” Vega told the Post. “I would die if my son grew up to be a Cowboys fan. That’d be awful. I don’t even know how I’d feel.”

Lucky for Vega, the Cowboys dug themselves enough of a first half hole that a valiant second half comeback attempt fell short. Robert Griffin Vega--who would have been Austin Miles Vega, named after receiver Miles Austin, if Dallas had completed the comeback--is due in April.

“I actually like it,” Pena said. “I didn’t at first. I think it just stuck with us. All my sisters call him Little Robby Griff. I don’t like the Redskins, but I love his dad, so….”
