Cowboys Confident Byron Jones Can Handle Work at Two Positions

Going into the final preseason game, the Dallas Cowboys are confident that they can move first round pick Byron Jones around the field without any danger of the workload becoming too big for the rookie.

As Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News reports, Jones lined up with the first team safeties in the team’s walkthrough on Monday, taking J.J. Wilcox’s usual spot next to Barry Church. Wilcox was dealing with a sore neck, Jones coming off a preseason loss to the Vikings in which he played both corner and safety.

In a recent appearance on G-Bag Nation on 105.3-FM The Fan, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones declared his confidence in the man the Cowboys made the 27th overall pick of the 2015 Draft.

“Not all guys could do it,” Jones said, per the Dallas Morning News. “I think he’s unique in terms of the positions that he’s playing. He’s playing nickel, he’s playing dime, he’s playing press corner, he’s playing free safety, and he seems to have a grasp for it.

“It doesn’t seem too big for him. He seems to be able to step right in and play any of the positions that we ask him to play. He’s very versatile, which is very important for us right now. We couldn’t be more pleased with how he’s really absorbing everything out there. We really feel like whatever we ask him to do out there that he’s capable of doing it. He’s around the ball. I think the more comfortable he gets, the more plays he’ll make.”
