On Thursday, an MRI revealed that David Buehler has a strained hip, which will keep him out of action in Sunday night’s preseason matchup with the San Diego Chargers. In Buehler’s place, rookie Dan Bailey has taken over the kicking duties in practice, and will get his first chance to kick in a game on Sunday.
In the team’s 14-13 victory over Denver in the preseason opener, Buehler did all the kicking, making his only field goal attempt, though barely, as well as a successful extra point try.
It’s doubtful that anyone, even the most optimistic Cowboy fans, are happy with the kicker position at the moment. Veteran Kris Brown was cut shortly after the lockout was lifted, leaving Bailey and Buehler to compete for the job. Neither has been consistent in camp and, at times, the duo has been downright bad.
Buehler said before Thursday’s MRI that he felt that he was starting to come into form, but we’ll have to wait to see if this is true in a game situation. In any case, it should be interesting, though not necessarily a good kind of interesting, in the coming weeks.
