Tight end Martellus Bennett, who has spent most of camp recovering from an ankle injury, may be held out of Sunday’s preseason opener against the Cincinnati Bengals as a precautionary measure. Bennett missed the opening of camp with a sprained ankle, suffered while working out independent of the team at Valley Ranch, and has been visually frustrated by the injury since returning to practice last week.
According to Wade Phillips, Bennett wants to play. But if Phillips sees any danger in the Texas A&M product participating in the Hall of Fame game, he won’t hesitate to sit him out.
“I'm still thinking about holding him out,” Phillips said. “But he wants to play.”
The trouble lies in that Bennett wants to practice--this is no doubt a good thing, but each practice presents a potential setback for the ankle. Phillips’ thinking, then, may be that a weekend of R&R could be just what the doctor ordered for Bennett.
For what it’s worth, Bennett’s been fairly productive in practice since his return, but it’s obvious that the bum ankle is still bothering him.
“It's the same stuff that has been bothering me the whole camp,” Bennett said, per the Dallas Morning News. “It's been lingering. It ticks me off sometimes because I try to cut or something and can't really do what I want to do.
“It's been getting better, but it's hard to get it 100 percent when you're running on it every day and getting treatment. It's like you do a little bit, you gain, then you lose a little bit. It's something I have to stay on top of.”
