Anthony Spencer To Become Third Defensive Signal Caller of 2012

Anthony Spencer is being groomed as the Dallas Cowboys’ defense’s third signal caller of 2012.

Bruce Carter held that role for a few weeks in the wake of the news that Sean Lee, the original play-caller, would miss the rest of the season with a broken toe. Then, In last Thursday’s Thanksgiving Day loss to the Washington Redskins, Carter was lost for the year with a broken bone in his elbow.

Spencer got a small taste of the job after Carter left in the loss to Washington, and was encouraged.

It went pretty well,” Spencer said, per ESPN Dallas. “It was louder than I expected, but it went well.”

The main source of it being so “loud”? Always-animated defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, who was in Spencer’s ear via the defensive signal caller’s helmet which, of course, has a direct line to the big man’s headseat.

“I’d say it to myself after I heard it, so it’s just repeating it now,” Spencer said. “The only different thing is he’ll yell, ‘Watch this! Check this!,’ and other little stuff. You can communicate that within the time sometimes until it goes out.”
