Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer is cautiously optimistic that he’ll be able to return in time for the team’s regular season opener against the 49ers on September 7.
“I hope so. I hope to be back before the first game,” Spencer told the team’s official website. “I hope some time around there. It’s hard to say now. We’ve got time and not trying to rush things.”
Coming off microfracture surgery on his knee, Spencer was placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list to begin training camp. During the team’s practice sessions in Oxnard, Spencer remains off to the side, doing rehab work with the Cowboys’ training staff.
So far, Spencer has been encouraged by his rehab work.
“If I just keep working the way I’m working, I feel like we’ll be in a good place,” Spencer said. “Lifting heavier weights. I run little more. I just add a little more to my workout regime every day. It’s getting better.”
If Spencer isn't able to return, and he begins the season on the PUP list, he'll won't be eligible to come off of it for three to six weeks.
