Not that it will come as any surprise, seeing as how the team just signed quarterback Brandon Weeden, Troy Aikman doesn’t see the Dallas Cowboys selecting a quarterback at any point in next month’s NFL Draft.
“Didn’t sound like it,” Aikman said of Dallas taking a quarterback. “I think Brandon Weeden obviously has some talent, and Kyle Orton, I’m assuming he’s back. I’ve always been a big Kyle Orton fan. I think he’s fully capable, and I think he proved that in the last game of the season. "
“It doesn’t sound like they’ll be drafting anybody. But if they can find a free agent to come out and at some point down the road play like Tony has played, that’s a pretty good way to go.”
Orton reportedly considered retirement for a period following last season, but the word out of Valley Ranch is that--as far as the team knows, anyway--he’ll be back. Weeden is an interesting pickup, as the Cowboys showed some real interest in him when he was coming out of Oklahoma State in 2012. He was picked by Cleveland 22nd overall that year, but was cut after two disappointing seasons.
Helped along by their meetings with Weeden prior to the 2012 draft, the Cowboys were quick to bring him into the fold when he hit the market.
