Sugar & Plumm is a homemade sweets boutique, cafe and bakery where you can get anything from candies to sundaes to chicken and waffles to a "Bee Hive"--you'll soon find out what that is! It's a whimsical wonderland of treats to please all tastes. We talked to Lamia Jacobs, founder and CEO of the new tasty spot in Paramus, NJ (and soon to open in New York next year).
How did you come up with the concept of Sugar & Plumm?
Since I moved to America from Paris, I've been searching for a place where I could take my kids and my friends for a nice, relaxing meal any time of the day. That's when I realized I had to be the one to make it happen!
What are some of the most popular items with your clientele since opening?
The most popular treats are the French macarons and cake pops. The chicken & waffles and buckwheat crepes are also customer favorites.
Sugar & Plumm is described as an "imaginative wonderland." What are some of the more "imaginative" creations offered?
Our custom cakes and seasonal chocolate sculptures can be made to look like virtually anything, but it's our sundaes that wow customers on a daily basis. We serve our ice cream in deep goblets piled with whipped cream, homemade sauces, and more unusual toppings like meringue batons and vanilla crumble. They're beautiful to look at and really show off the whimsical side of our pastry kitchen.
Why did you decide to open in New Jersey before your New York City stores (scheduled to open in 2012)?
When I first came to New Jersey I was pleasantly surprised by how bustling it was, but also knew it needed a spot where the locals could enjoy quality desserts and a serious savory menu as well. The Bergen Town Center just seemed like the perfect location: always busy and filled with families from Bergen County looking for something fun to do and good to eat.
We recently had an episode themed "favorite things between two buns"--do you guys offer anything that could fall into this category?
Yes, we serve a very popular "Plumm Burger" made with dry-aged beef, white cheddar, smoked bacon and plum tomato jam, mini sliders on our kids menu and a "foot long" Angus beef hot dog with house mustard, relish and onion.
What's your personal favorite thing on the menu?
The French macarons! I eat a pistachio and a licorice macaron every day, even for breakfast! On the savory menu, I can't resist the buckwheat crepes and usually have them for lunch.
Our “unique eats” episode is airing next week. How does Sugar & Plumm offer a unique dining experience?
Sugar & Plumm offers a unique dining experience in that it combines shopping, dining and dessert in one setting. Guests are free to shop the candy and toy section while they wait for their meal or watch crepes and sundaes being made before their eyes. As for a unique dish, we serve a plated dessert called the "Bee Hive." It looks like a classic hive, but it's made from swirls of meringue with an ice cream center--a new take on the baked Alaska.
Catch 1st Look Saturdays on NBC after Saturday Night Live. And, don't miss the "unique eats" episode on November 19, 2011.
