Campers, Leave the Marshmallows at Home

Burn bans are in place in 209 of Texas 254 counties

Texans headed outdoors for spring break could be prohibited from roasting marshmallows or cooking burgers over campfires.

Burn bans are in place in 209 of Texas' 254 counties, and anyone planning to camp or picnic at parks should check with county and park officials before starting any fires, officials said.

Every county in Texas is in some stage of drought, with the central part of the state experiencing the worst of it.

Burn bans vary by county, Texas Forest Service spokeswoman Misty Wilburn said Monday.

"Some of them ban everything," she said.

County commissioners approve burn bans, which can be renewed every 90 days.
