Legal Sharks Circle as Hicks Tries to Sell Rangers

Texas Rangers owner Tom Hicks faces a new lawsuit as he prepares to sell the baseball team.

It’s another dispute over the failed Glorypark development that was to surround the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington with shops, restaurants, housing units and two hotels.

The team and several entities connected to Hicks were partners in the Glorypark project.

The new lawsuit was filed Monday by the project architect RTKL Associates and contractor Vratsinas Construction Company.

The companies claim they are owed nearly $7 million for work that was completed.

“Sophisticated developers like those who have become defendants in our lawsuit are the type where we would expect them to honor their verbal promises and their contractual representations,” plaintiff’s attorney John Nassen said.

Over a period of several years, Nassen said his clients were at first paid in full for their work, but that payments stopped in December 2008.

A partner in the Glorypark project, Steiner and Associates, sued Hicks last week over ownership of the land. Now Steiner is also a defendant along with Hicks in the new lawsuit.

A statement released by Hicks spokesman Rick Ericson said Hicks Holdings could not comment on the specifics of the new lawsuit yet, but that Steiner was the Glorypark developer.

“Therefore most of the issues we understand are raised in the lawsuit should be addressed to Steiner,” the statement said.

Last week, Hicks was quoted as saying the lawsuit filed by Steiner has no merit and would not stop the sale of the team.

Hicks has announced a deal to sell the team to an investor group that includes former Rangers pitcher Nolan Ryan.
