A North Texas building supplier is slashing prices to move ceiling fans and lighting fixtures languishing in his warehouse because of the recession.

When the recession hit, home building stalled, said Carl Owens, who owns Sunway Fan in Carrollton.

"We started accumulating excess inventory and had to have an outlet to distribute this inventory out of our warehouse," he said.

Owens opened his wholesale showroom to do-it-yourselfers. He also started a Web site to sell surplus merchandise.

Because Owens needs to clear inventory, he sells items at a fraction of their usual retail price. Customer Jill Kelley said she recently purchased a chandelier worth $600.

"I got it for $60 in here," she said.

Kelley said the low prices have allowed her to move faster on upgrades to her home.

"I can buy two or three of an item that I could have bought one of at one of the big-box stores," she said.

For Owens, the silver lining in the recession may be a new line of business.

"At this point, I think it's working outstanding," he said.
