Coldwell Banker's rankings put Arlington as the only Texas town in the top 10 for most affordable homes in the United States.

The rankings make an "apples-to-apples" comparison between four-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath homes across the nation.

Grayling, Mich., took the top spot with an average 2009 sales price of $112,675. Arlington placed sixth with an average 2009 sales price of $138,775.

On the other end of the spectrum, San Francisco was the sixth most expensive, with an average sales price of $1,363,250 while La Jolla, Calif., came in as the most expensive place, with an average 2009 sales price of $2,125,000.

Overall, the study concluded consumers can buy a 2,200-square-foot, four-bedroom home for less than $200,000 in more than 80 U.S. markets, including Arlington.

Here's how other North Texas towns in the survey stacked up:

  • Arlington - $138,775
  • Dallas - $332,375
  • Fort Worth - $153,450
  • Plano - $216,250
