Woodfire Evolves Beyond Old-School Steakhouse

An old school steakhouse across the street from M Street Bar and The Granada Theater seemed out of place to people familiar with Woodfire’s Lower Greenville ‘hood. Who wants to nosh on a $50 steak as overzealous college students stumble past?

The newly renovated restaurant beckons with a wrap-around bar, wood grilled cuisine, live music and patio anchored by a fire pit.

“The contrast to the restaurant before is that it was very intimate, it was very dark and rustic. It’s very open now -- vibrant -- and we just wanted to create an energy,” said Marketing Director Rick Shew.

It's not just the decor that's lightened up; Executive Chef Daniel Nemec tells us his menu “has something for everyone.”

There's some Asian flare (shredded tenderloin spring rolls, sashimi peppered tuna, miso glazed salmon), pizzas, and prime beef short ribs -- braised for 6 hours -- the revamped menu. Even the sides are all over the place -- in a great way -- with Rosemary herb cheese grits as a buttery, creamy and delicious choice.

Nemec says there’s nothing worse than eating at a restaurant that serves pre-made sauces or spring rolls -- that's why Woodfire uses fresh ingredients in all their homemade drizzles. Fresh herbs and fruit are used to create “cheffie” cocktails infused with liquid courage.

Woodfire is as casual as it’s chef driven. Diners can easily fill up for $25 (the most expensive entrée is the wood grilled Alaskan King Crab legs). Enjoy random weeknight fun at the bar or post up for weekend brunch. And don’t forget to try the grits or simply Gourmet Yourself and make a monster batch at home.
