New “Wet” Retailers Missing Bubbly Champagne Sales

New Year's Eve is just a few days away, but a lot of Dallas stores have not yet received their licenses to sell alcohol.

Those that can sell alcohol are reporting robust sales, with more people apparently ready and able to celebrate and welcome in the year 2011.

Shopper Michael Quintana said he was spending a little more on champagne for his New Year's Eve party, not only because he had more to spend this year, but also because he wanted to help boost the economy.

But stores still waiting on licenses will likely have to wait until New Year's Eve 2011 to cash in on customers like him.

Nearly 140 retailers in Dallas that were hoping to cash in on alcohol sales will have to continue to wait.

So far, only a handful of permits have been handed out.

"The licensing process was pretty arduous and lengthy, and we're working through that licensing process right now," said Kroger spokesman Gary Huddleston.
