Designer Profile: House of Dang!

NBCDFW Designer Fashion Week

Where to begin with ‘House of Dang!’?

For starters, designing duo Andrew Bayer and Doug Voisin attended art school together here in Big D back in 2003.  Except that’s not exactly where they met.  To explain, the duo says, “We had many classes together but never spoke, due to the fact that Andrew talks too much, and Doug finds that annoying.”  ‘Nuff said.

Fast forward to post-graduation, and the pair found themselves bonding over various “tragic designs” they encountered through a shared internship.  Upon finally realizing they shared a similar perspective (and sense of humor), Bayer and Voisin launched their independent label, ‘House of Dang!’.

Since 2006, this talented team has been designing from their own private studio, first in East Dallas, and now in Oak Cliff.  “Doug + Andy = Dang,” as they say, and the equation results in a collection of chic, casual pieces to mix and match for a playful end result.  Below, find out more about their inspirations and plans for the future, then check out our exclusive ‘House of Dang!’ gallery.

What inspires you as a designer?
“We draw inspiration from all over the place.  Whether it’s from the people we surround ourselves with or music and movies.  Also, currently we are inspired by Troop Beverly Hills staring Shelly Long!”

How does living in DFW influence your designs?
“Though Dallas isn’t the largest city, there is so much diversity here and so much undiscovered talent.  The city is starting to grow at a rapid pace, and we know a lot of people moving back to Dallas from L.A. and New York.  The quality way of life here is pretty amazing.   There isn’t as much of a rat race here, and it’s easier to find your focus.”

What are your favorite pieces to design?
“We tend to design a lot of separates, so our clientele have more options to mix and match and play up their style.”

What seven words would you use to describe your style?
“Dang!, Colorful, Fresh, Youthful, Energetic, Playful, Approachable.”

If you could design for a celebrity, who would you pick?  Why?
Zooey Deschanel is adorable in every way.  We love how she carries herself and how she plays up her unique personal style!”

What's do you have planned for the near future?
“Right now we are working on Spring 2011, looking to expand into more retail spaces and hitting up market in Las Vegas.  We are also hosting a trunk show at Bows and Arrows on May 13.  There will be more info on our website closer to the date.”

House of Dang! designs are currently available at Bows and Arrows on Greenville Avenue.  For more information visit TheHouseofDang.com.
