Shanghai has one, New York City has 10, but there isn't a single H&M in all of Texas.
An H&M commercial running on Dallas airwaves is adding fuel to speculation that the trendy retailer is headed to the Metroplex. But hold onto your handbags -- the spots are national advertising, not local commercials.
"These spots in no way imply that we are opening in the Texas market in late 2010 or early 2011," H&M spokeswoman Jennifer Ward said. "At this time, we have not signed a lease to open stores, and we will get back to you when there is more information regarding our expansion to the Texas market."
Ward said the national commercial is airing in several markets without H&M stores.
However, an H&M real estate manager also told the Dallas Observer's Unfair Park that an announcement about a Dallas location could come as early as next week. But the company's PR people wouldn't confirm the report.
The company also denied another part of the Observer report, saying that it has no plans for a Christmas promotional campaign with Dallas artist Erykah Badu.
Like many North Texans, Dallas resident Tiffany Gerhart has heard rumors of H&M coming to town.
“I think it would be a huge hit,” she said. “All my friends would be there for sure.”
The fashionable-yet-affordable Swedish clothing store is currently expanding in other parts of the country. H&M opened a location in St. Paul, Minn., last week and is opening a store in Tacoma, Wash. But the closest one to the Metroplex is in Missouri.
“I think they should put one in Dallas,” Big D resident Brittany Scruggs said.
She's not alone. A Facebook page is dedicated to bringing H&M to a city -- any city -- in Texas.
