For the third annual Lone Star International Film Festival in Fort Worth's Sundance Square, the Lone Star Film Society is presenting a wide slate of films -- but this weekend has some of the best features of the fest.
Blood Simple
Joel and Ethan Coen's first feature won the Grand Jury at Sundance back in 1985 and although we'd argue their later films are more memorable (Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski, No Country For Old Men, etc.), "Simple" has plenty to love, even a quarter of a century later. Screening 9:45 p.m. Friday, November 13, AMC Palace.
The Messenger
Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster star in this drama about two military officers working with the Casualty Notification Office. It's already building buzz for Oscar possibilities for Foster's role as the younger officer only three months away from finishing his service. Recent events in Fort Hood might make this one a little harder to watch, but likely even more poignant. Screening 7:00 p.m. Saturday, November 14, AMC Palace.
The Greatest
Nominated for the Grand Jury award in Sundance, "The Greatest" is another one of those indie films everyone is buzzing about. After two parents (Pierce Brosnan and Susan Surandon) lose their eldest son in a car accident, a girl claiming to be his girlfriend comes looking for closure and a place to live. Full of intense drama and exploration of grief, it sounds like a good film to bring a handkerchief to. Screening 9:30 p.m. Saturday, November 14, AMC Palace.
